Jeffers & Bristol West Indian Phoenix Bow Out in First Round

IslandStats.com
Bermudian international Cameron Jeffers and his Bristol West Indian Phoenix CC teammates saw their Gloucestershire County Cup campaign cut short after a 36-run defeat to a clinical Bishopston CC side.

Having won the toss on a pristine batting deck, Bishopston elected to set a target, driving their way to a formidable 239-9 from their allotted 40 overs.

The bedrock of the hosts' innings was a majestic, front-foot exhibition from Richard Boroughs, who anchored the top order with a fine knock of 75.

While the majority of the Phoenix attack endured a punishing afternoon, Neiland Cadogan turned in a world-class spell to restrict the damage. Cadogan tore through the upper order to return superb, economical figures of three wickets for 25 runs from his six overs.

Jeffers also delivered a heavily disciplined shift with his spin, sending down eight overs to claim one wicket for 46 runs, ensuring Bishopston were kept within chasing distance at the death.

Faced with an asking rate of exactly six runs an over, Bristol West Indian Phoenix started their chase with plenty of intent but continually lost crucial wickets at the worst possible times.

All-rounder Ashur Morrison spearheaded the resistance with a fighting, team-high 47 from the middle order, while Jeffers was unable to replicate his recent league form with the bat, chipping in with just 5 runs before being trapped.

The definitive turning point arrived courtesy of Bishopston's standout bowler, William Thirkell. Thirkell put on a masterclass of line and length, returning devastating match-winning figures of 4-21 from his eight overs—including two maidens—to completely tear the tail end away.

Phoenix were eventually bundled out for 203, sealing a comprehensive 36-run victory for Bishopston, who safely advance to the second round.
