The PHC Lady Zebras demonstrated their championship credentials at Bernard Park, staging a superb second-half comeback to claim a 3-1 victory over a highly talented Under-17 Select Team.
The opening fixture of the Bermuda Football Association’s Women’s Division gave the national youth prospects a perfect platform to test their development, and they initially threatened to pull off a major upset.
The Under-17s broke the deadlock in the 26th minute when a slick counter-attacking move found Priya Dill, who kept her composure to slot home and give the youngsters a well-deserved lead.
Shaken by the early setback, the experienced Lady Zebras gradually asserted control over the midfield. Their persistence finally paid off five minutes before the interval when Janiya Sealey broke through the youthful defensive line, blasting an equalizer into the net in the 40th minute to send the teams into the break deadlocked at 1-1.
The senior side wasted no time stamping their authority on the contest after the restart.
In the 49th minute, Bermudian international forward Jasmine Spence showcased her clinical edge inside the penalty area, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to rifle the Lady Zebras into a 2-1 lead.
The Under-17 Select side fought valiantly to find a way back into the match, utilizing their speed on the flanks to push for an equalizer. However, the Zebras' defensive unit held firm, turning away successive waves of pressure before launching a decisive counter-offensive.
The points were officially sealed in the 62nd minute when the powerful Keunna Dill found space in the final third, driving a low effort past the goalkeeper to wrap up the scoring.
The 3-1 victory ensures the Lady Zebras start their domestic campaign on a high, while the Under-17 Select side will take immense encouragement from an elite tactical performance against senior opposition.
