Bermuda Suffer Heavy Triangle Series Defeat to USA South

IslandStats.com
Bermuda’s Men’s National Rugby Union team suffered another punishing afternoon on home soil, slumping to a heavy 54-5 defeat against a ruthless USA South side at the National Sports Centre.

The bruising loss comes just a week after the Gombeys fell heavily in a 52-12 Rugby Americas North (RAN) interregional test match against the Cayman Islands on the North Field.

Hoping a shift to the Flora Duffy South Field Stadium would spark a turnaround to open the Bermuda Triangle Series, the hosts instead found themselves completely stifled by the power and clinical execution of the visiting Panthers.

USA South laid down a devastating marker in the opening 40 minutes, completely dominating territory and possession from the first whistle. Exploiting defensive lapses and turning over the ball at the breakdown with ease, the visitors systematically dismantled the Bermudian lines.

By the time the referee blew the whistle for the interval, the scoreboard reflected total American dominance, with the Panthers carrying a massive 48-0 cushion into the locker rooms.

The second half proved to be a far more fragmented and physical affair as the tropical heat took its toll. USA South opted for a more conservative approach to preserve their commanding lead, adding a pair of well-struck penalties to tick their total tally over the 50-point mark.

However, the closing stages were marred by disciplinary issues for the visitors, who saw their composure unravel under a string of refereeing sanctions, ultimately reducing them to just 13 players on the pitch.

Bermuda capitalized on their numerical advantage to orchestrate their finest sequence of the afternoon. Following a brilliant, incisive setup from Hadleigh Tucker, Dzuir Gill powerfully breached the American backline to crash over for the hosts' lone try of the match.

While the scoreline made for harsh reading, the late consolation gives Bermuda something to build upon before they pivot to face the touring Atlantic Privateers in their final round-robin fixture.
