Tajer Basden and his Johnson C. Smith's teammates delivered a series of gritty performances at the CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, helping the Golden Bulls secure a hard-fought second-place finish in the overall men's standings.
Taking to the track at the Virginia State Track facility in Petersburg, Basden faced a grueling schedule in the men's 400-metre hurdles. After navigating a challenging field in the preliminaries to clock 58.64 and secure the seventh-fastest qualifying time, the sophomore found another gear when it mattered most.
In the high-stakes final, Basden shaved over a second off his qualifying mark, stopping the clock in 57.55 to secure sixth place overall. The result contributed vital points to the Johnson C. Smith tally in a championship defined by slim margins.
While Virginia Union claimed the men's crown with a commanding 156 points, the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls proved to be the "best of the rest," finishing as the overall runners-up with 109 points.
The podium finish was bolstered by standout individual performances across the squad, including Princewell Martin, who captured the CIAA title in the 400-metre hurdles with a blistering 52.74, and Divine Gee, who dominated the triple jump with a leap of 14.78 metres.
The performance caps a consistent season for Basden, who recently placed seventh at the Golden Bulls Invitational in April. With the collegiate outdoor season reaching its climax, Basden's ability to peak at the championships further solidifies his role within one of the region's premier athletic programs.
