Bermudian middle-distance runner Amaris Munya played a vital role on the track as Montverde Academy were crowned the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 2A State Champions.
The prestigious state championships, held at the UNF-Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, saw the nation’s top high school talent converge for a weekend of high-stakes competition. Munya and her Montverde Academy teammates produced a series of dominant performances across the board to secure the overall 2A State title, reinforcing the academy's status as a powerhouse in Floridian athletics.
Munya’s primary contribution to the point tally came in the Women's 4 x 800m Relay. Entrusted with the high-pressure anchor leg, the Bermudian standout produced a clinical performance to guide her team to a sixth-place finish in a competitive field, stopping the clock at 9:38.37.
In a significant individual milestone, Munya matched her Personal Best for the 800m distance during the relay, recording a blistering split of 2:19.
The young athlete returned to the track for the individual Women's 800m, showcasing remarkable recovery and endurance. In a tactical race that featured several of the state's quickest specialists, Munya battled through to finish 10th overall with a time of 2:20.40.
The state title marks a successful conclusion to the high school season for Munya, whose consistency and personal best-matching speed provided a crucial foundation for Montverde's trophy-winning campaign.
