Montverde Academy’s track and field stars made their presence felt at the Lake-Sumter Championships in Bushnell, as Amaris Munya led a strong girls' contingent to a podium finish.
In a competitive field of 13 teams, the Montverde girls secured an impressive third place overall, spearheaded by a clinical performance from Munya. The distance specialist asserted her dominance in the 800 meters, clocking a time of 2:23.43 to claim the championship title and provide the highlight of the meet for the Eagles.
On the boys' side, Montverde placed eighth in the team standings, with the versatile Zydon Furbert showcasing his athletic range. Furbert, typically a force to be reckoned with over 400 meters on the track, stepped into the field events to test his strength in the Men’s Shot Put. He finished 20th in a crowded field, recording a top toss of 9.40m.
The meet served as a vital barometer for both squads as they head into the business end of the season. While Munya’s gold-medal run in the mid-distance remains the standout takeaway, the depth shown across the girls' roster suggests they will be a significant threat as regional qualifiers approach.
For Furbert and the boys' team, the focus shifts back to the lanes, where they will look to translate their multi-disciplinary conditioning into podium finishes on the track in the coming weeks.
