Bermuda’s sprinting star Miles Outerbridge fell agonizingly short of a historic sprint double on the final evening of the 53rd Carifta Games, as the curtain came down on a memorable championship in Grenada.
After his record-shattering gold in the 100m earlier in the meet, all eyes at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium were fixed on the Under-20 Boys 200m final. Outerbridge, who had qualified as the second-fastest seed after breaking a nearly 50-year-old national junior record in the heats, appeared poised to complete a rare and prestigious double.
In a race of the highest caliber, the Bermudian sensation powered off the bend and looked to be in contention for the top step of the podium as the field charged toward the line. However, he was pipped in the final strides by Jamaica’s Sanjay Seymore. In a dramatic photo finish that left the crowd on the edge of their seats, Seymore clocked 20.63 seconds to take the gold, with Outerbridge recorded at a blistering 20.67 seconds to secure a magnificent silver. Despite the narrow margin of defeat, the performance cements Outerbridge's status as one of the most exciting prospects in Caribbean athletics.
While the sprinters provided the fireworks, the final session also tested the resolve of the island’s distance runners. In the Under-20 Boys 5000m final, Gianluca Bortoli produced a gritty and disciplined performance against a formidable field. Navigating the twelve-and-a-half laps in the heavy evening air, Bortoli maintained his position within the chasing pack to cross the line in fifth place.
His time of 16:11.83 earned him a respectable top-five finish in one of the most grueling events on the schedule, rounding off a campaign defined by Bermudian resilience. As the team prepares to return home, they do so with a bolstered medal haul and a new national hero in Outerbridge, whose record-breaking exploits have provided the defining narrative of the games.
