Bermudian cyclist Kaden Hopkins tested his endurance against a high-caliber European field at the 25th Classic Loire Atlantique, finishing 102nd after a punishing 160km route from Nantes.
Representing the Atom 6 Bikes-Cycleur de Luxe-Auto Stroo Continental Team, Hopkins navigated the technical and undulating terrain of the French one-day classic in a time of 3:46:54. The result comes as Hopkins continues to build his momentum on the professional circuit following a successful stint at the Pan American Road Championships earlier this month.
The race was characterized by a high-tempo pace from the outset, with the peloton fracturing under the pressure of several short, sharp climbs synonymous with the Loire-Atlantique region. Hopkins remained resilient in the chasing groups, eventually crossing the line 11:42 behind the day's victor.
The gold medal went to Portugal’s Iúri Leitão, riding for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA. Leitão demonstrated superior sprinting power at the conclusion of the marathon effort, stopping the clock at 3:35:12 to secure the title.
For Hopkins, the completion of such a demanding course provides further vital experience in the European peloton. Having recently recovered from a fractured collarbone to secure top-ten finishes in Colombia, the Bermudian international remains focused on refining his form as the Continental season moves into its busiest period.
