Bermuda’s Zydon Furbert has officially added his name to the traveling squad for the 2026 Carifta Games, producing a clinical performance at the Highlander Classic in Orlando to smash the qualifying standard.
Representing the elite Montverde Academy, Furbert arrived at the Lake Highland Prep track knowing exactly what was required. After coming agonizingly close to the mark earlier this month, the versatile sophomore left nothing to chance in his latest outing.
Lining up in Heat 6 of the Boys Varsity 400 Meters, Furbert delivered a textbook display of speed and tactical pacing. He tore through the final 100 meters to win the heat in a blistering 48.86 seconds.
The performance was significantly better than the required Under-17 Bermuda National Athletics Association (BNAA) standard of 50.44. By shaving nearly two seconds off the benchmark, Furbert has signaled himself as a genuine medal contender for the regional showpiece in Grenada.
Furbert’s qualification is the latest success story for the "Bermuda Connection" at Montverde Academy. Having only joined the Florida-based institution in January, his transition from the football pitch to the track has been seamless.
The result is particularly impressive given that Furbert had previously focused heavily on his football commitments with the Soccer Institute at Montverde Academy (SIMA). His ability to hit such an elite time so early in the outdoor season suggests there is plenty more to come as he sharpens his form for April.
Furbert joins a growing list of Bermudian track stars—including the likes of Miles Outerbridge and Sanchez Smith—who have already secured their spots for the games at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium.
With the BNAA qualifying window nearing its conclusion, Furbert’s breakthrough provides a significant boost to the national team’s medal prospects in the quarter-mile events. As the team prepares to depart for Grenada, all eyes will be on whether Furbert can lower his time even further on the international stage.
