The road to the Carifta Games continued at the Flora Duffy South Field Stadium, as the Bermuda National Athletics Association hosted its latest round of Qualifying Trials. With the regional showpiece looming, the island’s top junior athletes returned to the National Sports Center to sharpen their form and secure their places on the plane.
The standout performance of the meet belonged to Sanchez Smith, who once again proved his class in the Under-17 Men’s 3000 Meters. Having already met the qualifying criteria in a previous meet, Smith showcased remarkable consistency by clocking a time of 9:27.70. His performance was significantly faster than the established standard of 9:58.00, further solidifying his status as one of Bermuda’s leading medal prospects for the upcoming championships.
In the sprint events, Amara Samuels remained close to her top form in the Under-17 Women’s 100 Meter Dash. Samuels, who has already surpassed the 12.35-second barrier required for automatic qualification, was timed at 12.38 on this occasion. Despite the fractional difference, the young sprinter's ability to consistently run near the standard suggests she is peaking at the right time for the national squad.
Meanwhile, the field events saw Tatiana Sousa continue her dominant season in the Under-20 Women’s Javelin Throw. Already a qualified athlete for the Games, Sousa narrowly missed the 37.00-meter mark this time around, recording a best effort of 36.31 meters, or 119 feet 1 inch. As the final trial dates approach, the focus for Bermuda’s established qualifiers now shifts toward refining their technique as they prepare to face the Caribbean’s best.
