Middle-distance prospect Nirobi Smith-Mills faced a testing Indoor Opener, finishing seventh in a competitive Men’s A 800m field at the BMC Sheffield Indoor Grand Prix.
Competing at the National Indoor Athletics Centre, Smith-Mills crossed the line in 1:55.06 in the day's headline 800m race. The race was won by Tobias Cheesbrough, who led a tight leading pack with a time of 1:52.46.
The event followed revised World Athletics rules for indoor 800m races, which now utilize a break point similar to an indoor 400m. Representing Nottingham Trent University, the Bermudian sat within the main pack for much of the contest but was unable to bridge the gap as the leaders surged in the final 200 meters.
Smith-Mills’ performance comes off the back of a strong 2025 season where he secured a podium finish at the Birmingham Grand Prix and set a personal best of 1:48.39 in Watford. Despite being just outside his indoor best, the Sheffield outing provides a solid foundation as he builds toward the America East Indoor Championships and the outdoor season.
