Barbados Cruise as Leewards Falter in Super50 Opener

IslandStats.com
Barbados 144 Leeward Islands 65

Barbados Women laid down a marker in the opening round of the 2026 CG United Women’s Super50 Cup, securing a comprehensive 79-run victory over the Leeward Islands at the Park Hill Playing Field. In a match defined by contrasting fortunes with the bat, a resilient half-century from Naijanni Cumberbatch proved the difference as the Leeward Islands struggled to replicate the form that saw them capture the T20 Blaze title just days ago.

The Bermudian interest in the fixture was centered on all-rounder Katherine Bean-Rosario, who was omitted from the starting eleven for this opening 50-over contest.

Shawnisha Hector was the standout performer for the Leewards, ripping through the Barbados top order with a clinical display of pace bowling. Hector finished with impressive figures of 4 for 19 from her 5.5 overs, ensuring the dangerous Barbados lineup never truly settled. However, Naijanni Cumberbatch proved to be the immovable object the Leewards could not dislodge. Playing a lone hand, Cumberbatch anchored the innings with a patient 74 not out, guiding her side to a total of 144 all out in 47.5 overs.

The chase proved to be a bridge too far for the Leeward Islands, whose batting lineup failed to find any rhythm against a disciplined Barbados attack. Tonya Martin offered the only notable resistance with a top score of 15, but wickets fell at regular intervals as the pressure of the required run rate mounted.

Shamilia Connell was the architect of the Leewards' downfall, mirroring Hector's first-innings heroics by claiming 4 for 17 in a devastating spell. The Leeward Islands were eventually bundled out for just 65 in 25.5 overs, handing Barbados a dominant start to the tournament.
