Bermudian sprinters Amaris Munya and Arima Turner produced a string of standout performances on the second day of the VA Indoor Showcase in Virginia Beach.
Competing at the high-performance Virginia Beach Sports Center, the Montverde Academy duo were at the heart of the action in one of the most prestigious meets on the American indoor circuit. The pair teamed up for a top-five finish in the relay events before Turner continued her individual dominance in the short sprints.
The highlight of the afternoon for the Bermudian pair came in the Girls' Invitational Sprint Medley Relay (SMR). Representing the Montverde Academy 'A' team, Turner and Munya played pivotal roles in a fast-paced heat that featured some of the top high school programmes in the United States.
The Academy quartet crossed the line in 4:20.22, securing a respectable fifth-place finish overall. Turner’s explosive speed out of the blocks helped establish a strong early position, while Munya—making her debut at the Showcase—showed her range by anchoring a difficult leg to keep the team in contention for the podium spots.
Away from the relay, Arima Turner continued to justify her reputation as one of the region's elite prospects. The senior delivered a statement performance in the 55-metre dash, winning her preliminary heat in a blistering 7.19 seconds.
That time saw Turner finish second overall out of a staggering field of more than 200 competitors, comfortably securing her place in the next round. Her consistency followed a strong showing on Friday, where she clocked 25.17 seconds in the 200m to finish 15th out of 56 runners.
For Amaris Munya, the weekend represented a series of "firsts." Beyond her contribution to the relay, the junior also took on the 1000 metres—her first competitive outing at the distance on an indoor track.
Munya had expressed excitement about the challenge ahead of the meet, noting that the 800-metre leg of the relay medley would serve as the perfect preparation for her individual goals. Her transition into the elite US collegiate-prep environment at Montverde continues to yield impressive results as she adjusts to the tactical demands of indoor racing.
