The National Archery Association of Bermuda’s Outdoor National Championships finally went ahead on Southside this weekend, but only after a delay and a fierce battle against relentless wind at the Gold Point Archery Range.
Following a postponement last weekend due to poor weather, the competition was delayed again on Saturday to allow for a brief pause in the rain. However, the strong breeze remained constant, buffeting the targets with a sustained force of 25 knots and powerful gusts reaching up to 30 knots.
Archers had to demonstrate remarkable focus and rapid adaptation to the challenging crosswinds throughout the 12 ends of competition. The difficult rescheduling meant that eight archers in the Amateur and Junior Divisions were unfortunately unable to compete.
Despite the testing conditions, the Men’s Medal Matches delivered high drama.
Camerin Pickering, a familiar face on the international stage, showcased his experience by claiming the Gold Medal.
The Silver Medal went to Jaydon Roberts, who put in a strong performance to secure second place, while Bernard Wade rounded out the podium by taking the Bronze Medal.
In the Women’s Medal Match Finals, it was Robin Selley who successfully negotiated the wind to claim the Gold Medal.
Elektra Smith impressed with a solid performance to secure the Silver Medal, while the Bronze Medal was claimed by N’Dera Smith, ensuring a strong showing for the top female archers of the day.
The event, which is a crucial fixture in the national calendar, successfully determined the top archers in a demanding environment, proving their skill and mental fortitude in extreme conditions.
