Bermuda's two athletes at the World Boccia Americas Regional Championships both faced formidable opposition and challenging results as the individual competition continued in Cali, Colombia.
Paralympian Yushae DeSilva-Andrade, who was celebrating her birthday, opened her campaign in the BC1 Female Division with a tough loss, going down 5-2 to Andreza Oliveira of Brazil. Oliveira is one of the continent's top players, and DeSilva-Andrade will now need to bounce back quickly in her subsequent pool matches to keep her hopes of advancing alive.
Meanwhile, Omar Hayward was back in action in the BC1 Male Division and suffered his second defeat of the championships. Facing Roly Castro Nuñez from Peru, Hayward battled hard but ultimately lost with a final score of 7-4.
Both Hayward and DeSilva-Andrade will face further high-level competition over the coming days as they seek to navigate their respective pools and qualify for the knockout stages of the regional championships.
