Opportunity International Young Reporters Programme

IslandStats.com
Aspiring sports correspondents have a chance to train at the pinnacle of events as the International Olympic Committee opened up applications for the next edition of the Young Reporters Programme this week.

Taking place during the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, 16 journalists, aged 21-25, from around the world will be selected to participate in this immersive training programme. The next edition will feature a new format inspired by recent trends, including a particular focus on social media. Under the guidance of Olympic media professionals, the selected reporters will receive comprehensive training covering print journalism, photography, broadcasting and social networks.

Participants will learn about mixed-zone operations and press conferences, while reporting on sporting events and cultural activities. Courses will cover how to write compelling, human-centred stories, produce content on time, edit multimedia assets, and ensure the accuracy and fairness of information being reported. They will also cover the integration of social media and data analysis into sports coverage.

All articles, photographs, and video recordings produced will be shared across the Young Reporters Programme's media platforms, providing participants with international exposure. Guest speakers representing international media and the Olympic Movement will enrich the training, and all participants will receive an official IOC certificate of participation. The most deserving Young Reporter will be awarded the Steve Parry Award.

Young professionals aged 21 to 25 with a background in journalism, photography, or broadcasting are invited to apply through the dedicated portal at Olympics.com. The application period closes on November 30th. Young reporters will be notified of their selection by the end of February 2026. All applicants must be fluent in English and include a portfolio and letters of recommendation.

In addition to the above-mentioned process, candidatures will also be submitted by the Organising Committees of the next editions of the Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games – Dakar 2026, Dolomiti Valtellina 2028, Los Angeles 2028, French Alps 2030 and Brisbane 2032 – thus ensuring a broad representation of the Olympic Movement.

Launched at the inaugural YOG in Singapore in 2010, the IOC Young Reporters Programme has so far trained 126 journalists from 68 countries, helping them gain the tools and experience needed for a career in sports media. Many participants have gone on to work for the Olympic Games or major broadcasters, digital platforms, and news agencies.
