After winning the toss and electing to bat, Bristol struggled to build momentum, with their innings being curtailed at 128 all out. Roger Sillence was the standout performer for Bristol with a top score of 39, but he lacked significant support. The collapse was largely due to the superb bowling of Frenchay's Shalinda Arachchige, who finished with impressive figures of 3 for 22, while Smith also contributed a crucial wicket.
