This week, we take a look back at the distinguished career of Bermudian cyclist and Olympian, Elliot Hubbard, a former professional who competed on the world stage.
Hubbard's career is highlighted by his participation in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, where he represented Bermuda in the men's individual road race. Despite his hopes, his Olympic dream was cut short when he was caught in a crash on the fifth of 17 laps, forcing him to abandon the race.
A key part of his professional journey was his time with the renowned Navigators Cycling Team. After an initial professional contract with the European team AKI-Safi, Hubbard joined the New Jersey-based Navigators in 1998, a squad known for its success in USA Cycling and UCI America Tour events.
Hubbard's career also saw him compete in other major events, including the Commonwealth Games and the Pan Am Games. He achieved a notable 19th place finish at the 1998 Commonwealth Games and a 15th place finish at the 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg.
Now retired from professional cycling, Hubbard remains a key figure in the local sporting community and has been actively involved in the Bermuda Bicycle Association. His journey from a young rider traveling to Europe to a professional cyclist and Olympian has made him a role model for a new generation of Bermudian athletes.
