St. George’s President Offers Apology & Sanctions

St. George’s Cricket Club President Mishael Paynter released the following statement, “The St George’s Cricket Club announced the sanctions imposed on Onias Bascome and Macai Simmons, which stem from Cup Match 2025 as per the Cup Match Code of Conduct for Players and Team officials (last updated 2018) and the Notification of Procedure.

Article 3 Notification Procedure

3.1.1 For Level 1 Offences and Level 2 Offences: He/she may admit the offence charged and accede to the proposed sanction specified in the Notice of Charge. In such circumstances, and provided that such admission has been received by the Match Referee prior to the commencement of the hearing at the time/place specified in the Notice of Charge, the hearing shall not be required and no further action shall be taken, save that the Cup Match Clubs shall promptly issue a public statement confirming: (a) the commission of an offence under the Code of Conduct; and (b) the imposition of the applicable sanction specified in the Notice of Charge.

General Principles of Procedure

3.3 The Cup Match Clubs will issue a public announcement regarding any decision of the Match Referee made under the Code of Conduct, as soon as is reasonably practicable after the decision has been communicated to the parties. The public announcement of the decision may include details of the offences committed under the Code of Conduct and of the sanctions imposed, if any.

Article 5 Sanctions on players and team officials

Onias Bascome has pleaded guilty to the Level 1 Offense- 2.1.3 Showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision.

NOTE: Article 2.1.3 includes: (a) excessive, obvious disappointment with an Umpire’s decision; (b) an obvious delay in resuming play or leaving the wicket; (c) shaking the head; (d) pointing or looking at the inside edge when given out lbw; (e) pointing to the pad or rubbing the shoulder when caught behind; (f) snatching the cap from the Umpire; and (g) arguing or entering into a prolonged discussion with the Umpire about his decision.

It shall not be a defence to any charge brought under this Article to show that the Umpire might have, or in fact did, get any decision wrong and the sanction attached to the

Level 1 Offense

Onias Bascome has accepted the Sanction for a Level 1 Offence-Warning/reprimand and/or the imposition of a fine up to 25% of the applicable Match Fee.

Sactions are in the form of a reprimand from the St. George’s Cricket Club and a fine which can go up to 25% of the applicable match fee.

Macai Simmons has pleaded guilty to the Level 2 Offense-2.2.1 Showing serious dissent at an Umpire’s decision.

NOTE: Dissent, including the examples given in Article 2.1.3 above will be classified as ‘serious’ when the conduct contains an element of anger or abuse which is directed at the Umpire or the Umpire’s decision or where there is excessive delay in resuming play or leaving the wicket or where there is persistent re-reference to the incident over time.

It shall not be a defence to any charge brought under this Article to show that the Umpire might have, or in fact did, get any decision wrong. and the sanction attached to the Level 2 Offense.

Macai Simmons has accepted the Sanction for a Level 2 Offence - The imposition of a fine of between 15-50% of the applicable match fee.

We, St. George’s Cricket Club, apologise to our members, the public at large, and sponsors for our players' behavior and breaking of the Code of Conduct. Along with that, we hear you and the plethora of opinions on how to improve Cup Match, and throughout August will have several discussions with our executive, management, coaches, support staff, and players as we begin to collectively chart a way to improve and enhance Cup Match not only off the field, but on it as well.
