The build-up to Bermuda's iconic Cup Match has officially entered its final stages, with the Government demonstrating its annual commitment to the host club and the Premier hosting the traditional pre-match reception.
Premier David Burt, alongside the Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport, Owen Darrell, presented St. George's Cricket Club with a cheque for $55,000. This financial assistance forms part of the Government's yearly commitment to support the host club with their extensive preparations for the highly anticipated annual classic.
Premier Burt later hosted the annual Premier's Cup Match Reception at the historic Camden Grounds. This event consistently proves to be a popular and significant precursor to the main fixture, drawing together key figures from across the island's political and sporting landscapes.
In attendance last evening were members of the Cabinet and the legislature, underscoring the national importance of the event. They were joined by the presidents of both competing clubs, Richard Scott of Somerset Cricket Club and Mishael Paynter of St. George's Cricket Club, along with their respective teams.
The captains, Terryn Fray for Somerset and Sinclair Smith for St. George's, both provided remarks to an audience that included club officials, revered past Cup Match players, and a large gathering of family, friends, and supporters. The reception served as a moment of unity and celebration, further heightening the anticipation for the traditional two-day encounter.
