Bermuda began their campaign at the prestigious Super Cup NI with a 3-0 defeat against English Academy programme Blackburn Rovers. The match, played in challenging conditions, saw the Bermudian side battle hard against a technically proficient opponent.
The opening period of the encounter was fairly closely contested, with both teams vying for control. However, Blackburn Rovers soon began to demonstrate their quality, exhibiting good control and fluid movement in midfield, which allowed them to carve out openings through the IDA defence.
Despite the pressure, IDA defended with considerable grit, working to shut down threats and frustrate their opponents. They also looked dangerous on the counter-attack, with Cairo Burges's pace proving a particular handful, as he troubled the Blackburn defensive line on several occasions.
Blackburn eventually broke the deadlock with an exquisite finish, a shot from just outside the penalty area curling precisely into the top left corner. Their lead was then doubled when a clever run into the penalty area from the right flank was smartly cut back for a clinical finish inside the six-yard box.
In the second half, Blackburn maintained their edge in ball possession and movement. IDA conceded their third goal when losing possession during an attack on the left side. Blackburn swiftly counter-attacked to the opposite flank, capitalising on the IDA defender in transition, with their attacker driving into the box to finish smartly beyond the goalkeeper.
While IDA had isolated moments where they troubled Blackburn, they were ultimately unable to create clear-cut chances to score.
Attention for the Bermudian contingent now turns to the lessons gained from this opening match, as they prepare for their next fixture against Shankill, who themselves suffered a 1-0 defeat in their earlier match against Coleraine FC.
