Three talented Bermudian sailors, Rachael Betschart, Oliver Soares, and Trystan Hocking, showcased their skills on the international stage, competing among a formidable fleet of 247 boats from across the globe at the Waszp Worlds in Weymouth, UK.
The qualifying stages of the regatta presented a significant challenge, with sailors battling heavy winds. In these demanding conditions, the advantage of carrying an extra 20 kilograms proved crucial, influencing performance across the competitive field.
As an open event with no age restrictions, the Waszp Worlds saw a diverse range of competitors. Following the intense qualifying races, the Bermudian trio found themselves distributed across three different fleets, a testament to the depth of talent at the championship.
Betschart delivered a particularly standout performance, distinguishing herself as one of only four female sailors to successfully advance to the prestigious Gold Fleet. Competing against the world's best, Betschart finished 51st overall and secured an impressive 3rd place among the female competitors in the Gold Fleet. She concluded the regatta with a total of 336 net points, with her best individual race finish being a strong 25th place during the Gold Fleet Qualifiers.
In the Bronze Fleet, Soares demonstrated consistent sailing, finishing 27th overall. Soares accumulated 434 net points throughout the event, with his top individual result being a commendable 14th place during the Bronze Fleet Qualifiers.
Meanwhile, Hocking celebrated a remarkable victory, clinching first place in the Green Fleet event. Hocking's dominant display saw him accumulate just 26 net points. Across the 11 races, he recorded three outright wins and secured eight top-five finishes, highlighting his exceptional performance in his fleet.
The performances of Betschart, Soares, and Hocking underscore the growing strength of Bermudian sailing on the global circuit, with each athlete making a significant mark at the highly competitive Waszp Worlds.
