Bermudian prospect Nayon Grant was in action as his Gillingham Academy teammates kicked off their pre-season campaign with a match against Whitstable Town. The young Gills ultimately fell to a 4-1 defeat in their opening warm-up fixture.
Grant started the game and played the entire first half, before being substituted as part of pre-season rotation in the second period.
In the 36th minute, with the score level at 1-1, Grant delivered a promising cross from the right flank. Although a teammate's subsequent shot was blocked, and the home goalkeeper made an excellent save to prevent the ball from crossing the line, it highlighted Grant's early involvement in Gillingham's attacking play.
Despite their efforts, Whitstable Town eventually pulled away in the second half, running out 4-1 winners. While the result was not what Gillingham Academy would have hoped for, the early pre-season fixtures are crucial for building fitness, integrating new players, and assessing combinations ahead of the competitive season. Grant will be looking to build on this outing as the pre-season schedule progresses.
