Four youth teams representing the Warwick Football Academy (WFA) have travelled to Boston, Massachusetts, to compete in the prestigious New England Surf Soccer Club Tapin Memorial Day Tournament. The academy's young players are testing their skills against teams from across the region in this highly regarded youth soccer event.
The WFA Under 9 Girls team, under the guidance of coaches Nelson Lee and Mark Raposo, faced a tough opening match in the Under 9 Girls Gold Division. They went down 4-0 to NE Surf Metro West in their first outing. The young team, looking to learn from this experience as they continue in the tournament, bounced back to defeat Boston Bolts 3-1, with two goals from Lily Corbett and a single strike from Siena Horton.
In contrast, the WFA Under 10 Boys team, coached by Dustin Archibald and Catherine Mello, enjoyed a positive start to their campaign in the Under 10 Boys Gold C Division. They opened their tournament with a solid 3-1 victory over the Boston Bolts 2015 White Boys, WFA goal scorers were David Gutteridge, Landon Frank, and Sebastian Hughes. They followed this up with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against the North Shore Elite 2015 Boys, with goals from Frank and Levi Mello demonstrating their competitive spirit.
The WFA Under 11 Boys team, led by coaches Chris Fosker and Rob Bernardino, also had a successful start to the tournament in the Under 11 Boys Platinum B Division. They secured a 3-1 victory in their opening match against Bayside FC, with goals from Owen Fosker, Daige Musson, Nick Luber setting a positive tone for their campaign. Sam Bernardino scored twice and Isaac Wookey scored once as they defeated New England FC North Shore Red 3-1 in their second match.
The WFA Under 12 Girls team, coached by Sam Peters and Hadleigh Farrer, joined the winning trend, securing a 3-1 victory in their opening match against Lightning SC in the Under 12 Girls Silver Division with goals from Charleigh Maries, Sommer Barclay, and Kelia Crucenzo. They then drew 2-2 with NE Surf Metro Navy. The WFA goal scorers were Tilly Hughes and Evie Brogden.
The Tapin Memorial Day Tournament provides a valuable opportunity for these young players from the Warwick Football Academy to gain experience in a competitive international environment. With wins and draws already recorded, the academy will be hoping for continued success for all their teams as the tournament progresses in Boston.
