Bermuda celebrated their second Track and Field Medal of the 52nd CARIFTA Games in Trinidad as Tatiana Sousa claimed a hard-earned Silver in the Under 17 Girls Javelin Throw on the final morning at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
The evening session of the final day of the 52nd CARIFTA Games in Trinidad saw Bermuda's remaining athletes take to the track at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, bringing their participation in the prestigious junior championships to a close.
Munya Amaris, who had qualified for the final of the Under 17 Girls 800 Meter Run, competed in the evening session. She finished eighth in the final, clocking a time of 2 minutes 25.62 seconds. Unfortunately, there was disappointment for Surii Russell in the Under 17 Boys 800 Meter Run final as he was disqualified during the race.
Miles Outerbridge, who had shown promise in the 200 Meter Dash preliminaries, returned to the track for the Under 20 Boys final. He ran a solid race, crossing the line in 21.14 seconds to finish fourth overall, narrowly missing out on a podium finish.
The final Bermudian athletes to compete at the CARIFTA Games were Jake Smith and Oliver Hayward in the Under 20 Boys 5000 Meter Run. In a gruelling endurance event, Smith finished fifth with a time of 16 minutes 51.92 seconds, while Hayward followed closely behind in sixth place, stopping the clock at 17 minutes 20.18 seconds.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day, the Bermuda Under 17 Boys 4x400 Meter Relay team, consisting of David Morris, Surii Russell, Sanchez Smith, and Zydon Lightbourne-Furbert, competed in Heat 1 of their event. The quartet finished fourth in their heat with a time of 3 minutes 37.11 seconds. This performance placed them ninth overall, just outside the qualification spots for the final.
Sousa's Silver Medal provides a positive step to Bermuda's Track and Field campaign at the 52nd CARIFTA Games. Her achievement adds to the Silver Medal won earlier in the championships by Cameron Adkins in the Under 17 Boys 1500 Meter Run, showcasing the emerging talent within Bermuda's junior athletics program.
With the conclusion of these events, Bermuda's participation in the 52nd CARIFTA Games comes to an end. The championships saw some impressive performances, including Tatiana Sousa's silver medal in the Under 17 Girls Javelin Throw and Thomas Cechini's two bronze medals in the swimming events. The young athletes will return home with valuable experience gained on the regional stage as they continue their development in their respective sports.
