Youth Olympic Games Spotlight - Jesse Washington

A total of Seven (7) athletes will represent Bermuda at the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games that will take place in Nanjing, China from August 16th to August 28th 2014.

Today www.islandstats.com begins with the Spotlight on an athlete that will be vying for Medals at the Games. We bring you Swimmer Jesse Washington.

Q.
What's your Favorite Food?

A. Curry Chicken and Rice

Q. What is something you always do before you compete?

A. I like to visualize how I want my race to go

Q. Nick Name?

A. My coaches and friends call me different names but the most basic nickname is 'Jess'

Q. When you are not competing or training what are some of the things you like to do?

A. I like to relax and talk to friends.

Q. How did you first get involved in your Sport?

A. I started out doing the Whites Island Swim camp during the summer and then I decided to represent Purvis Primary in the Primary Interschool Swimming competition and that's when Mrs. Smith (one of the Sharks Swim Club coaches) recognized me

Q. Did you have a particular Sports idol?

A. I didn't have an idol when I started swimming and then I saw Michael Phelps win 8 Gold Medals and Roy-Allan Burch compete in the 2008 Olympics so I started to look up to them.

Q. When did you realized that you wanted to compete internationally?

A. Since the 2008 Olympics I've wanted to compete internationally but I didn't do my first international swim meet until 2010 which was in Florida.

Q. What one moment in your sport to date are you most proud of?

A. I'm always proud of myself when I get a Personal Best time but I think that my best performance was at the 2012 CARIFTA Games.

Q. What are your goals for the rest of 2014?

A. My goals for the rest of 2014 are to get Personal Best times at the Youth Olympics and then start training hard again in September for the new season.

Q. Can you give an insight into an average week of training for you?
A. On Mondays and Wednesdays I train from 4:15-7:15. I do an hour of land training and 2 hours of swimming. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I do an hour and a half of swimming before school and after school. On Friday from 4:15-6:15 I'm swimming and I finish off the week with Saturday morning training from 6:00-8:00 and in September we usually do beach training for an hour and a half to two hours.
