Bermuda limped into the final game against a confident Trinidad and Tobago side. With key players injured and playing out of position the effort on the day was to be stellar.
Bermuda were behind quickly with Trinidad and Tobago scoring a Try, but they missed the Conversion. Bermuda got back into the game when David Lunn Jr kicked a penalty to make the score 5 – 3 in Trinidad’s favor.
Trinidad scored another Try just before the break as the two teams went into the halftime period with Trinidad and Tobago leading 10 - 3.
Half time comments from coach James Herbie Adderley reinforced the game plan and encouraged the players to reduce the handling errors. James told his players, “We have had a good 60% of the ball, two stupid mistakes two scores by the opposition. We are in This!!”
With 14 minutes remaining in the game Trinidad and Tobago held a 15 – 3 and with the partisan crowd cheering on their Caribbean neighbors from the south and with Bermuda’s small contingent of supporters bellowing support for the boys in blue and white the game turned on it’s head.
Aldo Campbell scored a Try and another Lunn Jr. penalty saw Bermuda pull within four making the score 15 – 11.
With 2 minutes remaining in the game Patrick Richardson scored a Try in the corner and Lunn Jr added the Conversion to make the score 18 – 15 in favor of Bermuda.
When the Full time whistle sounded it was time for Bermuda to celebrate winning their first Men’s U19 Rugby Championship.
This is a humungous achievement for only their second time in the tournament.
The players and supporters celebrate as the Caribbean U19 Cup was presented to captain Somers Brewin, while the Man of the Match Award for Bermuda was given to Campbell.
