As the Bermuda Bicycle Association's (BBA) road race season heads toward the Butterfield Bermuda Grand Prix and the concluding months of the points series, racing resumed in Hamilton around the Victoria Park circuit.
The BBA’s top riders are also now vying for spots on the Bermuda team for the Elite Caribbean Cycling Championship to be held in Barbados in October, so the stakes in each race are quite high.
Garth Thomson edged out Mark Hatherly in the Men A category, with his teammate Neil de ste Crox third and a chasing Scott Williams 4th.
Thomson had been in a breakaway pack earlier in the race but came out briefly with a mechanical problem and rejoined the main group. He then bridged backup to the leaders and out maneuvered Hatherly on the final lap and hung on for the win.
In the Men B race, juniors Dominique Mayho and Tre'shun Correia made their debut in the adult race category with resounding success. Mayho took the sprint victory ahead of Tracey Wright and Correia who had separated themselves from the pack early on.
Coming off their participation in the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championship, the two Berkeley students have used the month since the regional championship to develop their fitness and skills further.
Other category winners were Maryellen Goodwin (Female B), Justin Ferreia (Junior A), Daniel Oatley (Junior B) and Christian Oatley (Junior C).
