As Bermuda will be hosting the 2009 Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships this weekend on July 25/26. A number of roads will be closed in order to accommodate the races and the Bermuda Bicycle Association (“BBA”) wishes to highlight these to the motoring public, in order to minimize inconvenience and delays.
On Saturday July 25, Middle Road and South Road will be closed to traffic in order to stage the time trial stage of the Championships. Starting at Paget Post Office at 7:00 AM, the race course is closed to traffic until the last rider has passed (expected to be sometime between 8:00 AM and 8:45 AM depending on where you are on the course).
Road Closures will be in operation as follows:
• Middle Road west-bound between Paget Lights and Barnes Corner 6:30AM to 8:30AM • South Road east-bound between Barnes Corner and College Road 7:00AM to 8:45AM
Middle Road east-bound and South Road west-bound remain open to traffic.
Motorists are asked to avoid the closed areas on Saturday morning and to watch out for cyclists on the roads. Over 80 marshals will be on the course to assist motorists and the BBA urges motorists who cannot avoid the area to be patient and cooperative in ensuring a safe event for the Caribbean region’s best young cyclists.
On Sunday July 26, the road race stage will be held on roads in and around Hamilton, requiring extensive road closures between 7:30 AM and 12:30 PM. During that time, the following road closures will be in effect:
• Entire lengths of East Broadway, Front Street, Par La Ville Road, Queen’s Street, Reid Street and Corkscrew Hill • Middle Road and Cavendish Road west-bound between Montpelier Road and Crow Lane traffic lights • Church Street East west-bound between Queen’s Street and Par-La-Ville Road • Additionally, access to those roads forming the race course will be restricted by closure of Burnaby Street, Parliament Street, Court Street and King Street south of Church Street.
Motorists wishing to access the city during the race are advised to use Montpelier Road and then Parsons Road or Happy Valley Road.
The BBA acknowledges and appreciates the understanding of the public in this matter.
Some 50-60 juniors from 10 Caribbean nations are expected in Bermuda this weekend to compete for the title of regional champion. Bermuda’s own 10-man team will also be contesting in front of the home crowd.
