BSSF Basketball Championships Five teams will be crowned champions tomorrow inside the Warwick Academy Gymnasium at the Bermuda School Sports Federation’s Basketball Championships. A full slate of matches are scheduled for the afternoon starting at 1:00pm with the Middle School Girls Final followed by the Middle School Boys final at 2:30pm. The senior school matches get underway at 4:00pm with Somersfield Academy taking on The Berkeley Institute in the junior varsity final. Somersfield were the top seed going into the playoffs after finishing the regular season with a 7 & 1 record, they will be counting on top scorer and assist leader Lucas Barbei as well as top rebounder George Dragonetti Jr. to keep a gutsy and ever improving Berkeley squad at bay. The senior girls final starts at 5:30pm and will see undefeated reigning champions Berkeley take on a feisty and athletic CedarBridge squad. Berkeley are enjoying their fourth straight undefeated season and are favourites to defeat their cross town rivals for the fourth time this season. Berkeley are still favorites despite losing starting point guard and leader Dominique Richardson as Kayjuana Lema and Crai-Che Hall have stepped up to the challenge and embraced the role of floor leaders. The Senior School finals at 7:00pm will be a repeat of last years final when Warwick Academy look to defend their title over regular season winners CedarBridge Academy. It’s setting up to be a mouth watering contest as both teams will be at full strength when they face each other for the third time this season. Warwick opened their 2010 campaign with a win over CedarBridge , but CedarBridge had the last laugh as they defeated Warwick in the season closer to win the league title. CedarBridge has now won three straight regular season titles but have yet to win a championship in those years. A great accomplishment considering they had only one starter returning this season. CedarBridge will be counting on the speed and shooting of guards Kavion Brown and Anthony Furbert and big men Ronald Daniels, Karim O’Connor and Phillip Burgess. Warwick will be confident though and they feel they can win their second straight title. They will hope to counter the CedarBridge Academy backcourt with speed of their own in Tevis Spence and the energetic Ra’ees Tankard. Their front court consists of Juron tucker, Josh Malpas and Kiwon Williams. Warwick has also received a boost by getting back the leadership and spark of Senior Kevin Minors who has missed most of the regular season.
