After a 2-year hiatus for Covid-19, the Annual Police Rugby Duckett memorial matches return this weekend at the Police Recreational Club in Prospect. Both menís and ladiesí police rugby teams are preparing for demanding matches when they compete against the best of the rest in Bermudaís oldest rugby event.
The annual games are played in memory of George Duckett, a former Commissioner of Police who was assassinated in 1972. Mr. Duckett was a popular, larger-than-life Commissioner who had a commanding presence standing at 6í5Ē tall, and was well known as an ardent rugby fan.
In 1973, the Bermuda Police Rugby Section commenced an annual game in his honor which is the longest-running memorial game in Bermuda. The BPRFC menís side will play the BRFU Presidents XV, while the BPRFC Ladies' first team will play a select side from the other ladiesí teams.
Serving Officers, former colleagues, and rugby fans across the Island are welcome to continue to show their respect by attending this sporting tradition.
ďThis is the highlight of our season and we are extremely happy to be able to host the Duckett Memorial games again after 2 years where the pandemic prevented our club day from taking placeĒ Adam Richards, Chairman of the Police Rugby Club said.
ďWe are looking forward to some quality rugby to close out the domestic season. Statistically, we shouldnít win when you look at the strength of all the opposition teams. However, the decades of results show that Police are dominant in this fixture, and this year we are hoping to add more success.Ē
Refreshments will be available up at the PRC afterward.
