Trailing by seven points with less than six minutes on the clock, Jenaya Wade-Fray’s University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Women’s Basketball team dug in and outscored Lee University 11-2 through the final stretch to pull out a 46-44 win in an exhibition matchup at the McKenzie Arena.
Wade-Fray a former player with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is now serving as an assistant coach with the team.
Lee’s Jenna Adams dropped in a pair of free throws to give her team its largest lead of the game, 42-35, with 5:47 to play. Senior Meghan Downes making just her third start for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, drained a 3-pointer. A steal by junior Ka’Vonne Townes put the ball back in the Downes’ hands for a layup that pulled Chattanooga to within two points, 42-40, with 5:10 on the clock.
After a missed jumper by Adams, senior Faith Dupree grabbed the rebound and Towns knotted up the contest with a layup. Lee pulled back ahead on a jumper by Hollie German in the paint, but a pair of made free throws and another jumper from Downes put the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga up by the final margin, 46-44.
Lee’s missed a 3-point attempt in the final seconds but managed to grab the rebound. However, Downes sealed the victory with a steal as time wound down.
