Danni Watson and West Virginia State University suffered tournament heartbreak as their Mountain East Conference Championship run was ended by Davis & Elkins College in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Officially recorded as a 1-1 draw after regulation and extra time, the quarter-final tie was decided from 12 yards, where the clinical Senators converted all three of their spot-kicks to seal a 3-1 victory.
The match began with early adversity for the Yellow Jackets. Davis & Elkins struck inside the opening quarter of an hour, converting from a set-piece in the 14th minute to take a 1-0 advantage.
West Virginia State spent much of the afternoon chasing an equalizer, dictating long stretches of play and probing for an opening against a resilient defensive line. Their persistence finally bore fruit in the 78th minute.
Pouncing on a loose ball scramble inside the penalty box, Cali Questel reacted quickest to bundle the ball into the back of the net and send the Yellow Jackets' bench into delirium.
With neither side able to find a winner in the closing stages, the contest was settled by the lottery of penalty kicks.
The shootout started in frustrating fashion for WVSU, as Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz saw her opening strike parried away. The woodwork then intervened on the second attempt, with París Filter’s powerful strike rattling against the crossbar.
Sharon Freire Omonigho kept Yellow Jackets' hopes alive by calmly converting their third penalty, but with Davis & Elkins flawless from the spot, the pressure mounted. When Karam's subsequent effort was pushed away by the goalkeeper, Davis & Elkins' progression to the semi-finals was confirmed, bringing a cruel and abrupt end to Watson and WVSU's post-season campaign.
