Argentina's Tomás Molinari has seized the overall lead at the 54th Optimist South American Championship following a testing, high-wind fourth day of racing in Maldonado Bay.
After two opening days of light and fickle airs during the Qualifying Series, Friday delivered a dramatic shift in conditions off the Uruguayan coast. A punchy breeze swept across the racecourse, testing heavy-air boat handling and substantially reshuffling the leaderboard across the two races completed, which pushed the overall series tally to six.
Molinari capitalised on the physical conditions to surge to the top of the fleet heading into Saturday’s deciding races.
Behind the frontrunners, the mid-fleet battles proved just as fiercely contested across the testing chop:
Heath Meyers holds 45th overall on 102 net points after posting solid 27th and 31st-place finishes in the heavier breeze.
Jesse Savage climbed to 72nd on 112 points, improving steadily as the afternoon progressed with race scores of 25th and 17th.
Rex Henagulph produced one of the standout performances of the day, storming to a brilliant race win in the opener before finishing 19th in the second to sit 75th overall on 115 points.
Aaron Riker and Elaine Jones find themselves locked together on 149 points in 133rd and 134th respectively. Riker secured an impressive 11th before dropping back to 31st, while Jones logged consistent finishes of 17th and 29th.
Alfie Jansma sits 151st on 191 points, showing sharp upward momentum in the breeze by crossing the line in 21st and 14th.
With just one day of competition remaining, all eyes turn to Saturday’s final races to see if Molinari can hold his nerve and lock up the continental title.
