Bermudian sailor Mike Wollmann has been appointed skipper of SSL Team Bermuda as the island prepares to take on the world’s elite at the 2026 SSL Gold Cup in Rio de Janeiro.
Wollmann brings an extensive pedigree of international competition to the role. Raised in Bermuda with an innate passion for life on the water, his career has taken him to some of the sport’s most demanding stages, including an impressive Gold Fleet qualification at his first Senior World Championship in the Nacra 17 class in France and appearances at the Pan American Games.
"Any opportunity to represent Bermuda is an incredible honour," Wollmann said. "Being able to do that while racing such exciting boats and competing alongside talented sailors makes it even more special."
The waters off Rio will also offer familiar territory for the new skipper. Wollmann spent three weeks in the Brazilian city acting as a Laser Radial training partner in the build-up to the 2016 Olympic Games, but he will now return to those famous shores at the helm of his country's flagship crew.
Ahead of the showpiece regatta, Wollmann stressed the importance of securing experienced coaching support to accelerate tactical development, strengthen squad synergy, and ensure the team extracts maximum performance when competition begins on the global stage.
