Bermudian middle-distance runner Amaris Munya and her Montverde Academy cross country teammates delivered a strong collective performance to finish second in an 18-team field at the Lake Minneola Last Chance Invitational.
Competing in their final regular-season test before the upcoming regional and district championships, the Eagles packed tightly near the sharp end of a 131-runner race to comfortably secure their place on the team podium.
Montverde set the tone early through Lyla McMillen, who spearheaded the Eagles' charge across the 5,000-metre course. McMillen clocked 19 minutes 34.4 seconds to secure sixth place overall.
She was followed closely across the line by team-mate Angelica Wolfe, who stopped the clock in 19:43.7 to grab 10th position, handing Montverde two finishers inside the top ten.
Munya provided crucial low points as Montverde's third scorer, crossing the line 16th overall in 20:08.1.
The scoring pack was completed in rapid succession behind her. Alafair Scelfo crossed in 31st place with a time of 20:50.7, before Federica Perez rounded out the Eagles' counting top five by stopping the clock at 21:15.7 to finish 37th.
Alon Scelfo added depth to the travelling contingent, completing the course 75th in 22:57.3.
The runners-up finish caps an encouraging build-up for Munya and her squad as they turn their attention to post-season competition.
