When Ruth Mello-Cann lines up for SSL Team Bermuda at the 2026 SSL Gold Cup in Rio de Janeiro, it will represent the culmination of a decade spent immersed in the Atlantic waters she calls home.
From early childhood days spent swimming and fishing around the island, Mello-Cann’s competitive sailing journey only truly ignited in 2015 courtesy of the Bermuda Endeavour Programme. She has barely stepped foot on dry land since.
Now an established multi-class sailor, Mello-Cann divides her time between the technical demands of Bermuda Fitted Dinghies, J/105s, and International One Designs (IODs).
A recent venture took her to the waters of Marblehead, Massachusetts, competing in a women’s invitational regatta. While the leaderboard finishes fell short of expectations, the experience proved a valuable testing ground.
"Racing with a new team taught me a huge amount," Mello-Cann reflected, pointing to the event as the catalyst for a fresh appreciation of the classic IOD fleet.
Selection for Bermuda’s SSL Gold Cup squad in Rio offers Mello-Cann her biggest platform to date—an achievement she views as a testament to persistence.
"Representing Bermuda in Rio is a dream come true," said Mello-Cann. "It has shown me that if you stick with something, you can go further than you ever imagined."
The 2026 regatta will place the island’s sailors directly against the world’s elite in big-boat match and fleet racing conditions vastly different from the familiar confines of the Great Sound.
For Mello-Cann, the focus heading into South America is as much about cohesion and shared growth as individual performance.
"A coach will help us learn to sail as a team rather than as individuals and work the boat like a well-oiled machine," she noted, highlighting the tactical gains required to take on traditional sailing heavyweights.
"It’s an opportunity to learn, develop, and become a better sailor."
With race day in Brazil drawing nearer, SSL Team Bermuda are prioritising teamwork, boat handling, and tactical sharpness, aiming to turn an ambitious grass-roots success story into a serious challenge on the international stage.
