Lauren Cardwell and her University of Toronto Varsity Blues produced a commanding second-half display to claim a 3-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors at Warrior Field.
Following a cagey opening two quarters that ended goalless, Toronto stepped up the tempo after the interval, scoring three unanswered goals to dismiss the hosts and keep the pressure on at the top of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) standings.
Second-year forward Catalina Meilleur proved the catalyst, breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute with a strike that ultimately sealed the contest.
The Blues maintained their attacking momentum into the final period. First-year midfielder Ellie Mullins doubled Toronto’s advantage early in the fourth quarter before rookie forward Vanessa Marques applied the finishing touch, converting from a penalty corner with just two minutes remaining on the clock.
Waterloo posed occasional threats on the break, working their way into Toronto territory to register four shots on target from five attempts overall. However, Blues goalkeeper Mary Yang produced an assured performance between the posts, stopping all four efforts to earn a thoroughly deserved clean sheet.
The result moves the Varsity Blues to a 5-1-3 record, cementing third spot in the OUA table.
Now sitting just two matches adrift of league leaders, U of T head into the decisive stretch of the regular season with significant wind in their sails.
Crucially for Toronto, their remaining three fixtures will all be played on home soil at Back Campus Fields, where they will look to maximise home advantage and mount a late challenge for top spot.
