Clockwork Precision and Community Spirit at Word of Life 5K

IslandStats.com
Runners put their internal pacemakers to the ultimate test as the second annual Word of Life Bermuda 5K introduced an inventive time-handicap challenge alongside its traditional road-racing honours.

Competitors were asked to predict their finishing times prior to the race before attempting to match them out on the course without the aid of watches, GPS, or timing devices.

Leading the men's handicap standings with uncanny accuracy was Topher Cox, who crossed the line in 28:00.82—missing his declared 28-minute target by less than a single second. Kevin Topple claimed second place, clocking 22:58.62 against a 23:00 prediction, while Derrick Hendrickson rounded out the men's podium with a 28:57.22 finish against a forecasted 28:50.

In the women's handicap contest, Jennifer Chisnall took top honours, stopping the clock at 28:10.78 against a predicted 28:30. Melina Finnigan claimed the runner-up spot with 41:35.85 against a 42-minute target, followed by Florence Sharp in third (39:05.81 against 39:36).

Beyond the pacing battle, established frontrunners made their presence felt across the competitive 5K divisions:

Men's overall and age categories: Sean Trott crossed first overall to capture the 20–39 crown in an emphatic 16:25.88. Age-group victories also went to Lucas Ferreira (10–19, 20:30.81), Unday Smith (40–49, 24:41.80), Colin Thompson (50–59, 28:44.65), and Kevin Topple (60–69, 22:58.69).

Women's divisions: Marta Komarkova was the first female across the line, securing the 20–39 category in 22:38.45, while Lea Osborne took honours in the 60–69 bracket with a 27:02.41 finish.

In the competitive 5K walk, Ciboney Jade Swan crossed first overall in 41:26.98 to take the women's title, with Floyd Ming leading the men's walkers home in 43:25.81.

The junior one-mile race saw Will Biram lead the way in 6:29.55, followed by Keziah Symonds-Smith, who topped the girls' field in 8:11.16.

The event, which attracted a blend of 26 competitive entrants alongside recreational runners and walkers, has raised nearly $3,000 for Word of Life Bermuda to support youth programmes across the island.
