Bermudian prospect Oliver Hayward has delivered a mature and candid assessment of his display at the World Triathlon Championship Finals in Pontevedra, Spain, insisting the lessons forged against the globe’s elite junior athletes will far outlast any finishing time.
Hayward, who earned his spot among the leading emerging triathletes in the sport, faced a fiercely competitive junior men's field in north-western Spain. Reflecting on a demanding day of racing across the swim, bike, and run legs, the teenager revealed how a crucial piece of pre-race advice kept him grounded when the pressure mounted.
"Triathlon has a funny way of reminding you that you can prepare for months, put everything you have into something, and still have things happen that are completely out of your control," Hayward wrote on social media. "You can’t control the swim, the other athletes, the conditions, or how your body feels on the day. What you can control is how you respond."
While acknowledging the race did not unfold entirely to plan, Hayward emphasised his pride in maintaining tactical discipline and emotional composure amid chaotic race conditions rather than panicking.
"This race wasn’t perfect, and it definitely didn’t go exactly how I had imagined it," he said. "But for once, I wasn’t chasing the race or trying to fix everything that had gone wrong. I was able to stay in my own race, make decisions, and dictate my own narrative. Looking back, I think that’s what I’m most proud of."
The championship outing marks another vital milestone in Hayward's progression through the international ranks as he continues to establish himself as one of Bermuda's brightest multisport prospects.
"The result will eventually become a number on a results sheet, but the experience, the lessons and the people who got me there will stay with me for a lot longer," Hayward added. "Never going to forget this one."
