Clara Leduc scored six minutes from time as Lauren Cardwell and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues salvaged a 1-1 draw against the Guelph Gryphons in an intense Ontario University Athletics field hockey encounter.
The result moves the Varsity Blues to a 4-1-2 record on the season, keeping them firmly in contention in third place in the OUA standings.
Toronto endured a difficult start in Guelph when the hosts broke through after just seven minutes. Madison Martin found an opening in the Blues defence to fire the Gryphons ahead and put the visitors on the back foot early.
U of T mounted a swift response, fashioning an opportunity to level the scores in the 13th minute, only for Guelph goalkeeper Samantha Wright to pull off a sharp save to deny first-year midfielder Ellie Mullins.
From there, the Blues gradually seized control of proceedings, dictating the tempo and racking up the pressure with an advantage in both penalty corners and shots on goal.
Their persistence finally paid off in the fourth quarter. In the 54th minute, third-year forward Leduc supplied the decisive moment, finishing neatly to bring Toronto level and inject late momentum into their search for a winner.
U of T pressed relentlessly in the closing stages in bid to snatch all three points, but Guelph's defence held firm until the final whistle to ensure the spoils were shared.
