Enrique Mendes and his Saint Peter’s University Men’s Soccer team-mates returned to winning ways, producing a spirited first-half fightback to secure a 2-1 conference victory over Niagara at Jaroschak Field.
A frantic three-minute burst before the interval proved decisive for the Peacocks, with Jesus Pila and Leo Coval both getting on the scoresheet to overturn an early deficit and condemn the Purple Eagles (1-4-1, Metro 0-1-0) to defeat.
The contest began at a bruising tempo. Darrell Etienne picked up a yellow card inside three minutes amid a physical opening exchange that also saw Niagara penalised for three rapid fouls.
It was the visitors who broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, capitalising after a foul by Tiernan Garvey to sweep in the opener.
Saint Peter’s responded with intent. Marcos De Elias tested the Niagara goalkeeper twice in quick succession with low drives, while Connall McErlain’s speculative effort from distance clipped the top right corner before being turned behind for a corner.
The pressure told in the 35th minute when Davis Barnes slipped a pass into the path of Pila, who finished coolly to restore parity.
Just three minutes later, the turnaround was complete. With Toby Smith having already sent warning shots towards the top corner, Coval pounced in the 38th minute to stroke home the Peacocks’ second. Mendes almost extended the cushion immediately after, firing an effort on goal as the hosts went into the break firmly in control.
Niagara pressed for a route back into the contest early in the second half, but Saint Peter's goalkeeper Sebastian Heredia-Randen stood firm with a string of sharp stops.
The Peacocks managed the game shrewdly through the middle stages before ramping up the pressure again in the final 20 minutes, with Coval and Garvey both threatening to add a third.
The home defence held firm in the closing moments to close out the victory, ending with 16 attempts — nine on target — to get their conference campaign back on track.
