Andrew Armstrong’s teammate Joshua Nugent produced a moment of individual brilliance to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory for Marshall over the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, ensuring the Thundering Herd opened their Sun Belt Conference campaign in winning fashion.
After a tense, evenly matched opening period, Nugent broke the deadlock just before the hour mark with his third goal of the season to settle a gritty contest at the Bell Soccer Complex.
The visitors had carved out the better opportunities in a cautious first half. Francisco Guimares forced an alert save from Wildcats goalkeeper Gilles Monti after 17 minutes, before Andrew Armstrong tested Monti five minutes from the interval with a low drive.
Monti stood firm on both occasions, ensuring the sides went into the break level at 0-0.
Marshall found their breakthrough 13 minutes into the second half through a blend of defensive grit and direct attacking pace. Carl Romberg initiated the move by cleanly dispossessing a Kentucky defender in midfield, freeing Nugent to attack the retreating backline.
The forward darted past three challenges on a surging run before calmly slotting a low finish past Monti into the bottom-left corner.
Marshall managed the remainder of the match with composure, repelling Kentucky’s late push to protect their clean sheet and seal maximum points on the road.
