Hornets & Zebras Win Premier Division Openers

IslandStats.com
Defending champions Dandy Town Hornets launched their Bermudian Premier Division title defence with a frantic 3-2 victory over X-Roads, while hosts PHC Zebras snatched a late 2-1 win against Devonshire Colts at PHC Stadium.

Dandy Town Hornets 3 X-Road’s 2

Dandy Town made an emphatic start to their campaign, needing just three minutes to unlock the X-Roads defence. Neat build-up play down the left flank culminated in a pinpoint delivery met by Jahkari Furbert, who hammered an emphatic strike into the back of the net.

The Hornets consolidated their dominance midway through the opening half. Fluid passing through central midfield carved open the opposing backline in the 27th minute, allowing talisman Lejuan Simmons to slot home and double the advantage.

X-Roads mounted an immediate reply on the half-hour mark. Kneiko Richardson gathered possession on the edge of the penalty area and fired through a crowded 18-yard box, the ball trickling past the unsighted goalkeeper to halve the deficit heading into the interval.

The contest swung into high drama late in the second period. With eight minutes of regulation time remaining, X-Roads leveled the scoreline when Donovan Thompson timed his run to perfection, meeting a cross to power a header home for 2-2.

However, the parity proved brief. Dandy Town summoned an instant response three minutes later as Edry Moore reacted quickest to a loose ball during a frantic goalmouth scramble, bundling in from point-blank range to seal all three points.

PHC Zebras 2 Devonshire Colts 1

In the evening fixture at the same venue, PHC Zebras were made to work hard before edging out Devonshire Colts 2-1.

Colts drew first blood in the 28th minute after the Zebras failed to deal with a dangerous corner, leaving Jorj Dublin on hand to poke the ball over the line from close range.

PHC hit back two minutes before the break. After being awarded a spot-kick, Enrique Russell stepped up and kept his composure to stroke the penalty home and restore parity.

Following an evenly contested second half, the hosts found the decisive moment in the 85th minute. Joshua Joseph broke the deadlock, finding space in the final third to fire past the goalkeeper and secure a hard-fought opening weekend triumph for the Zebras.
