Bermudian defender Danni Watson and her West Virginia State University teammates scored three first-half goals in a 4-0 Mountain East Conference victory over Shawnee State University. The Yellow Jackets, who move to 1-2-1 on the season, featured four different goal scorers.
WVSU dominated the box score, putting 20 shots on goal compared to three for the Bears while earning a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks. Celina Seggelmann played 66 minutes in goal and recorded one save. Reygan White made two saves in 24 shutout minutes of relief.
It did not take long for the Yellow Jackets to strike as Cali Questel found the back of the net in the fourth minute. Seven minutes later, the Bears goalkeeper was forced to make the first of many saves on the night, stopping a Kaylee Smith attempt. The Yellow Jackets swarmed the net in the 13th minute when Jazz Cedillo forced a save that resulted in a corner kick, leading to two more WVSU shot attempts.
Questel sparked another offensive surge in the 19th minute, forcing three Shawnee State saves before Cedillo converted off a corner kick to extend the lead to 2-0. The Yellow Jackets pressed for six more shots over the next seven minutes, testing the Bears keeper four times. WVSU capitalized shortly before halftime as Kanon Tai took a shot that was turned away, but Maria Alejandra Hernandez Diaz cleaned up the rebound to make it 3-0.
Coming out of the break, WVSU picked up right where it left off, earning a corner kick and putting a shot on goal in the first four minutes. Leila Karam then finished an assist from Rachel Okoro in the 50th minute to push the lead to 4-0. Ten minutes later, Hernandez Diaz and Tai both put shots on target that were saved. WVSU controlled the remainder of the match, generating five corner kicks and 14 shots—seven on goal—in the second half.
