Nathan Petronzio produced a disciplined opening-round 67 to seize a one-shot lead as the Goslings Bermuda Open got under way in glorious sunshine at Port Royal Golf Course.
The American professional took full advantage of calm coastal conditions on the Southampton layout, picking up six birdies against a solitary bogey alongside 11 pars to set the four-under-par clubhouse target.
He faces immediate pressure from the amateur ranks, led by Virgilio Paz, who carded a fine three-under 68. Paz rolled in five birdies to offset a pair of bogeys, staying firmly within striking distance going into Friday.
Fellow amateur John Tandberg sits alone in third place, signing for a two-under 69 after a composed afternoon featuring four birdies, 12 pars, and two dropped shots.
The chasing pack remains densely bunched just three shots off the pace at one under par, where professionals Benjamin Martin and Peter Bradbeer are joined on 70 by Sebert Walker.
With conditions at Port Royal expected to test players as the sea breezes pick up over the weekend, Petronzio will look to consolidate his slender advantage when the second round begins.
