A spirited second-half revival was not quite enough for Thomas College as their cross-town rivals Colby College held on for a breathless 3-2 victory in the Elm City derby.
Trailing 2-0 at the break, the Terriers rallied fiercely behind second-half strikes from Brewer Osteen and Andrew Hodgins. However, a crucial 75th-minute set piece from the Mules proved decisive, leaving Thomas just short despite mounting relentless late pressure.
The contest opened at a brisk pace, but it was Colby who seized the initiative just before the half-hour mark.
In the 27th minute, the Mules found a clinical breakthrough, drilling a crisp, low effort into the bottom-right corner to break the deadlock.
Before the Terriers could regroup, Colby doubled their advantage five minutes later. A cruel double deflection inside the penalty area wrong-footed the defence, allowing the ball to trickle over the line for 2-0.
Thomas goalkeeper Fisher pulled off a sharp stop to prevent further damage before the interval, while Gustav Franzen saw an effort charged down at the other end as the hosts entered the tunnel facing an uphill climb.
Thomas re-emerged with renewed urgency after the restart, dictating possession and penning Colby deep inside their own half.
The pressure finally told in the 72nd minute. Jeremiah Gomez unleashed a stinging drive that the Colby goalkeeper could only parry into the danger zone, where Osteen was on hand to bundle home the rebound and halve the deficit.
Yet the visitors delivered an immediate counterpunch. Just three minutes later, Colby restored their two-goal cushion, curling home a direct free kick to make it 3-1.
Refusing to fold, Thomas poured forward once more:
83rd minute: Franzen delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, meeting the run of Andrew Hodgins, who directed a superb header into the net to set up a grandstand finish.
86th minute: David Ivarsson struck a fierce long-range drive that looked destined for the net, only for the Colby keeper to produce a full-stretch fingertip save.
Despite throwing bodies forward through five tense minutes of stoppage time, Thomas were unable to engineer an equaliser, leaving Colby to claim local bragging rights on an afternoon of fine margins
