Bermuda’s Ja’Shay Trott and her Americas NextGen teammates suffered heartbreak on the big stage, falling just two runs short against Canada in a tense, rain-shortened ICC U19 Women’s World Cup Americas Qualifier.
Coached by former Bermudian international Terry-Lynn Paynter, the NextGen side produced a spirited performance throughout, only to be denied at the death in a thrilling finish.
Trott Impresses with the Ball
Weather disrupted proceedings early on, forcing officials to curtail the fixture to 16 overs per side.
Canada took first use of the surface and compiled a competitive 66 for 5 from their allotted overs. Trott was right at the heart of the bowling attack, delivering a disciplined spell under pressure. The Bermudian youngster finished with figures of 1 for 14 from two overs, maintaining tight control to restrict the Canadian top order.
So Close, Yet So Far
A further interruption saw the target revised via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method, leaving Americas NextGen with a steep task: 70 runs required from just 14 overs.
The chase was composed, controlled, and ran right down to the wire. Despite losing only two wickets in their pursuit, NextGen fell agonizingly short of the finish line—finishing on 68 for 2 as Canada held their nerve to secure a dramatic two-run victory.
While the result proves a bitter pill to swallow for Paynter’s side, the disciplined display and Trott's sharp all-round execution provide plenty of encouragement for the remainder of the qualifying campaign
