Bermudian Olympian Erica Hawley has looked back on an intense, four-week whirlwind tour across the globe, capping off a demanding schedule that saw her race through Edmonton, return home to Bermuda, and head south for international stops in Rio de Janeiro and Asunción.
Hawley concluded her grueling stretch with a hard-fought seventh-place finish in Asunción, South America, a result she was delighted with following a frustrating outing in Brazil.
"What a wild four-week trip," Hawley reflected on social media. "Finished up with a seventh place which I’m proud of :) After a shocker swim in Rio, I was stoked to get out the water tenth here."
The race in Paraguay showed immense promise early on, with Hawley finding her rhythm on the bike segment before bad luck struck in the closing stages. A dramatic slip entering the second transition (T2) threatened to derail her afternoon completely.
"Felt in control through the bike, but had a tumble entering T2 and completely decked it," she said. "Bummed, as I felt like it was shaping up to be a very, very good day."
Despite the heavy fall, the Bermudian showed signature resilience to put together a strong run leg, battling through physical discomfort that proved to be more than just numb feet.
"Still ran well, but what I thought was just frozen toes at the start turned out to be a pretty bad bruise on my toe," Hawley added. "Luckily, no fracture!"
Having brushed off the bumps and bruises, the Olympian now turns her focus to recovery after a relentless month of high-level international competition.
