Bermuda’s rising triathlon stars produced a series of resilient performances against America’s elite at the in West Chester, Ohio.
Qualification for the showpiece event at Voice of America Park—the flagship fixture on the US junior elite calendar—requires a top-15 finish in one of five qualifying rounds throughout the season. All six Bermudian competitors made their mark by placing inside the top 25 of their respective divisions.
Luca Bortoli, Bermuda’s lone entrant in the Junior Draft-Legal race (16–19 age group), was forced to weather literal and metaphorical storms.
With thunder and lightning forcing a 45-minute delay mid-swim, race officials suspended action before restarting competitors individually based on swim splits.
Disadvantaged by a late start-line position allocated to non-US athletes, Bortoli exited the water in 43rd place. However, he mounted an impressive comeback through the field—leading a chase pack on the bike before powering home on the run to secure a highly commendable 23rd-place finish.
Youth Elite trio shine in Gold Fleet performance
In the Youth Elite division (13–15 age group), Bermuda’s female contingent delivered a formidable group performance, with all three athletes cracking the top 25 in their debut at this level.
Elena Bortoli spearheaded the effort, exiting the water in 12th position before digging deep on the bike and run to claim 18th place overall out of 62 starters.
Close behind, Sofia Leclerc recovered from a challenging swim to carve through the field for 20th, while Riana Robinson recorded a top-20 bike split to battle back for 25th place.
Top-10 placement for Shepherd in boys' race
In the Youth Elite boys’ race, Rory Shepherd secured a top-ten finish, crossing the line in ninth position.
After exiting the swim in fifth, Shepherd was isolated on the second lap of the bike leg, losing vital time before reclaiming ground with a strong closing run.
Teammate Rohan Roopra executed a disciplined race strategy to finish 18th, staying clear of trouble on the bike and holding off late surges on the run to lock down a top-20 finish.
The squad will now take a well-earned break before turning their attention to the CARIFTA Triathlon Championships, which Bermuda hosts in October.
